Authorization and User Identification

BIRN provides capabilities to manage user identities and credentials, and group membership policy information.

User Registration Service

BIRN data services are distributed across many institutions, so we provide a centralized registration mechanism for new users. This web-based registration service allows users to sign up to use BIRN data and services and establishes BIRN-wide security credentials for their use

Credential Service

BIRN data services require security credentials in order for users to store or access data. The BIRN-wide credential service, accessed via a client tool on the user’s home system, provides a simple way for users to get a credential whenever they need to access BIRN services or data.

Group Policy Management

This new service will allow BIRN user teams to define user groups and assign access control privileges to these groups for use with other BIRN services, such as data access and storage services.

Status: In development (forecast for early 2010)
