BIRN Privacy Policy and Web Space

When you visit this Web site, www.nBIRN.net, we collect and store certain information about your visit automatically. This information does not identify you personally, unless you specifically choose to provide this information to us. We automatically collect and store only the following information about:

  • Internet domain (for example, “yourschool.edu” ) and your computer’s unique IP address;
  • if you linked to the BIRN site indirectly from another Web site, the IP address of that Web site;
  • type of browser software and operating system used to access our Web site;
  • date and time of your visit;
  • identity of pages you visit.

We may use this information to help us make our site more useful to visitors — to learn about the number of visitors to our site and the types of technology our visitors use. We do not track or record information about individuals and their visits.

If you request information or services from BIRN and submit personal information, we will only use the information provided to respond to your message. We will not share the information you give us with a government agency unless your inquiry relates to that agency, or as otherwise provided by law. We do not create individual profiles with the information you provide or collect information for commercial marketing.

When inquiries are e-mailed to us, we store the question and the e-mail address information so that we may respond electronically. Unless otherwise required by statute, we do not identify publicly who sends questions or comments to our Web site. We will not obtain information that will allow us to personally identify you when you visit our site, unless you chose to provide such information to us. We do not forward your mail outside of BIRN nor do we collect your name and e-mail address for any purpose other than to respond to your query. We will only retain the information as long as needed to respond to your question or to fulfill the stated purpose of the communication.

E-mail sent to BIRN may be seen by a number of people who are responsible for answering questions. If the information specialist who answers the mail does not know the answer to your question, your query may be forwarded to another BIRN employee more experienced in that area. You should be aware that e-mail is not necessarily secure against interception. Therefore, if your communication contains sensitive or personal information, you may want to send it by postal mail.
