The Operations Working Group (Ops WG) oversees the processes and practices for operating the BIRN system, including services provided by BIRN itself, by BIRN user teams, and by third-party service providers. We focus on three areas: assisting BIRN service providers with operational issues, establishing community-wide BIRN operational standards, and prioritizing known system issues. We also help the BIRN Steering Committee identify potential user needs based on reported operational experiences.
The largest of the BIRN working groups, the Ops WG includes more than 30 individuals from 13 institutions. Participants currently represent Duke University, Harvard University, the Information Sciences Institute/University of Southern California, and the Northern California Institute for Research and Education; the Universities of Chicago, Iowa, Minnesota and New Mexico; the Universities of California at Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco; and Yale University.
Ops WG objectives include documenting use cases and requirements for BIRN capabilities, establishing and documenting operational best practices within the BIRN community, tracking the availability and monitoring the quality of all BIRN capabilities, and broadening the range of capabilities available to BIRN community members.
